The Truth About Chemical Mosquito Sprays — What You Are Actually Inhaling

Most Indian households have a can of mosquito spray somewhere in the kitchen or bedroom. It comes out every evening before the windows open, or whenever a mosquito is spotted, or just out of habit because that is what has always been done.

Very few of us stop to read what is actually in it.

This is not meant to be alarming. But it is meant to be honest, because the things we use most casually are often the ones we question least. And the mosquito spray that gets used in an enclosed bedroom where your family sleeps is worth questioning.

What Is Inside a Commercial Mosquito Spray

Most commercial mosquito sprays sold in India are aerosol formulations containing synthetic pyrethroids, typically d-allethrin, prallethrin or transfluthrin. Some older formulations contain organophosphates. These are synthetic insecticides designed to affect the nervous system of insects.

They work by interfering with sodium channels in nerve cell membranes, causing continuous nerve firing that eventually kills the insect. This mechanism is extremely effective against mosquitoes and other small insects.

Here is the part that rarely makes it onto the packaging in plain language. The same chemical that disrupts a mosquito's nervous system is also a nervous system irritant for humans, particularly with repeated or prolonged exposure. The compounds used in these sprays are classified as possible human carcinogens or endocrine disruptors by various health bodies, depending on the specific compound.

The Indoor Air Quality Problem

When you spray a mosquito repellent in a closed room, you are not just spraying at the mosquito. You are dispersing fine chemical particles into the air of that room. These particles settle on every surface, including bedding, pillows, curtains and the floor.

Residual aerosol particles remain suspended in indoor air for a significant period after application. In an air-conditioned room with limited air exchange, this is substantially longer than in a ventilated space.

Burning mosquito coils is an even more concentrated version of this problem. The smoke from a single mosquito coil burning overnight produces particulate matter comparable to burning multiple cigarettes in an enclosed space. The active compounds are released into the air continuously throughout the night, directly into the breathing zone of sleeping people.

Children are more vulnerable to chemical exposure than adults because their body weight relative to exposure volume is smaller, their respiratory rates are higher, and their developing nervous systems are more susceptible to neurotoxic compounds. The bedroom is where children spend the most time. It is also where most mosquito control products are used.

The Accumulation Effect

One exposure to a mosquito spray at normal use levels is not a medical emergency for a healthy adult. The concern is not acute poisoning from a single use.

The concern is the accumulation of daily, repeated, low-level chemical exposure over months and years. This is the kind of exposure that is extremely difficult to connect to health outcomes because the signal is slow, diffuse, and has a very long time lag between exposure and effect.

Most studies on chemical pesticide exposure at home focus on occupational exposure, which is much higher in volume. Consumer household use sits below this threshold but well above zero. And in a country where mosquito pressure is high and daily spray use is genuinely common, the accumulated exposure over a lifetime is not negligible.

What Effective Natural Alternatives Look Like

The argument for natural mosquito control is not that it is somewhat effective and safer. It is that the best natural formulations are genuinely effective and do not have the same exposure risk profile.

Botanical compounds derived from neem, citronella, lemongrass and eucalyptus oil have well-documented repellent effects on mosquitoes. They work through a different mechanism than synthetic pyrethroids — not by killing mosquitoes but by overwhelming their chemical navigation sense so that they cannot locate and land on a target.

This distinction matters in practice. Repellent-based natural solutions work best in the space around people and entry points, creating a treated environment that mosquitoes avoid. Combined with physical measures like mosquito nets for sleeping areas, this approach provides effective protection without filling your indoor air with synthetic compounds.
